About Pope Saint John Paul II

Born Karol Józef Wojtyła on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland, Pope Saint John Paul II grew up amid hardship, war, and loss, yet developed a deep faith and love for Christ and His Church. Ordained a priest in 1946, he quickly became known for his pastoral heart, intellectual brilliance, and courage in defending the dignity of every person. In 1978, at age 58, he was elected the 264th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name John Paul II.

For over 26 years he led the Church as a tireless shepherd. He visited more than 120 countries, bringing the message of the Gospel to people of every culture and language. He championed human rights, defended life from conception to natural death, and called the world to authentic freedom rooted in truth. He launched World Youth Day, renewed devotion to Divine Mercy, and urged the Church to embrace a “new evangelization” with fresh courage and joy.

Canonized in 2014, John Paul II remains a beacon of hope, holiness, and leadership. His words “Do not be afraid” still echo as an invitation to trust God and live the faith boldly.

At St. John Paul II Catholic Church, the newest parish in the Archdiocese of Las Vegas serving the Inspirada neighborhood of Henderson, we take him as our model and intercessor. Like our patron, we seek to open wide the doors of Christ to our community. We pledge to serve with the same love, pastoral care, and missionary spirit that marked his life — forming disciples, strengthening families, welcoming the stranger, and building a vibrant parish where Christ’s mercy and truth shine. Guided by his example and prayers, we aspire to be a parish of courageous faith, joyful witness, and genuine service to all.
